Andy Serkis' Best Red Carpet Looks: A Masterclass in Timeless Style

Andy Serkis may be famous for disappearing into extraordinary characters, but his red carpet style has developed an identity of its own. The actor and filmmaker, known for performances across The Lord of the Rings, Planet of the Apes and Star Wars franchises, spent years favoring classic tailoring before gradually embracing more adventurous fashion. His wardrobe evolution has been subtle rather than dramatic, moving from dependable black suits to patterned coats, textured jackets and unexpected accessories. Along the way, appearances with his wife, actress Lorraine Ashbourne, have created plenty of coordinated fashion moments. The result is a style journey that has become increasingly expressive with time.

Earlier appearances showed Serkis relying heavily on traditional formalwear. At the 2012 Golden Globes, he chose a sophisticated all black ensemble while Ashbourne wore a complementary dark dress. Two years later, the Los Angeles premiere of The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies brought another classic choice, this time a black three piece suit. His Star Wars era continued that polished approach while introducing small variations. For the premiere of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Serkis appeared in a navy suit with a white shirt and bright red tie, adding a noticeable flash of color. At another premiere for the film, he returned to a traditional black tuxedo while Ashbourne provided contrast in a shimmering gold gown. Serkis rarely needed elaborate styling to make formalwear work, relying instead on fit and classic combinations.

By 2018, however, signs of experimentation were becoming clearer. At a Black Panther premiere, he wore a gray suit with a crisp white shirt, while another appearance saw him combine a black suit with a floral shirt. His Oscars look returned to traditional tuxedo territory, demonstrating that experimentation had not replaced his appreciation for timeless eveningwear.

More recent appearances have shown a noticeably bolder side. At the premiere of The Batman, Serkis stepped away from the standard suit with a patterned jacket, turtleneck and distinctive detailing. For Luther: The Fallen Sun in 2023, he continued the shift with a printed coat layered over a dark outfit. Then, at a 2024 Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes event, he mixed a textured blue bomber jacket with a floral scarf, relaxed trousers and sneakers.

Serkis has not abandoned classic tailoring, but he has clearly become more comfortable playing with texture, pattern and casual elements. Much like his acting career, his fashion works best when familiar foundations leave room for transformation. His red carpet wardrobe now feels less like a uniform and more like another opportunity to experiment.
