American man breaks record by visiting every sovereign country in 498 days

Almost every morning for over a year, Michael Zervos (USA) woke up in a new country, surrounded by unfamiliar sights and faces.

The 35-year-old set out to achieve the fastest time to visit all sovereign countries (overall), a challenge that meant travelling to nearly 200 nations. His mission was not only about record breaking, but also about sharing human stories of joy.

During his journey, Michael asked locals from each country to share their happiest memories. He collected moments of love and pride across cultures in a series of heartfelt video interviews. Michael shared that his own struggles with depression during the pandemic inspired this focus on happiness across the world.

This effort grew into Project Kosmos, which combined cultural exchange with a world-record challenge. By the time he returned to Detroit, Michigan, USA, he had set two Guinness World Records titles: the fastest time to visit all sovereign countries (overall) and the fastest time to visit all sovereign countries (male).

He completed the feat in just 498 days, well ahead of the previous record.

Though the record is extraordinary, the human connections fuelled his experience. Along the way, strangers welcomed him into homes, shared meals, and guided him through their cities. He often described being greeted “like an old friend” despite language barriers.

Michael enjoyed a plethora of cultural experiences, from Africa’s markets and the beauty of the Middle East, to the hospitality of Asia and the celebrations of South America and the Caribbean.

Though now back home, Michael is continuing the project by writing a book, drawing on his invaluable experiences from his trip.

Congratulations, Michael, you’re Officially Amazing!
